The Friends were established over fifty years ago with the aim of raising funds and carrying out voluntary duties to support the work of the Hospital. The local community has been most generous in that time by making very substantial monetary donations. The funds generated have financed large projects e.g.

  • Building a physiotherapy/occupational therapy unit
  • Extending the day room
  • Creating a palliative care suite
  • Maintaining the gardens and grounds for many years.

The Hospital has been provided with additional items of equipment and patients have benefited from the provision of individual TV’s, newspapers, free telephone calls and toiletries where needed also. There are currently over 25 friends who actively volunteer on a weekday rota to serve drinks to patients and engage them in conversation.

The Hospital is wholly owned and funded by the NHS and is believed to be the oldest in-patient hospital in Yorkshire.

Your support in becoming a member does not commit you to any duties or volunteering, unless you wish to do so.

As a member you would

  • Demonstrate your support for the work of the Hospital and its future development
  • Be able to vote on issues raised at the General Meetings
  • Be kept informed of and be consulted on the actions of the Executive Committee especially in relation to the spending of funds in the wider community
  • Be eligible to join the Executive Committee
  • Be invited to participate in the activities of the Friends
