At the end of a full year of grant-making for the Friends of St Monica’s Hospital (FOSMH), two pieces of feedback from groups that benefited demonstrate the impact made. As part of their programme of supporting good physical and mental health in local communities, a rising number of ideas and initiatives have seen FOSMH grants make them a reality.

Peter Berry, from FOSMH, said:

“One of the features of how we’ve been able and willing to spread our support is the range of people that have benefited. Local residents of all ages, housebound or active, those in existing groups or those coming together for the first time, have all been given our assistance. Some of the benefits are related to physical living, whilst others have been delivered in response to growing pressures on mental and emotional wellbeing”

Peter continued:

“We’ve recently had letters that indicate this range of support and help, and we’ll be continuing our grant making in 2023”.

A grant was made to the Easingwold Squadron of the Air Training Corps and Sue Simpson, Chair of its Civilian Committee, wrote:

“it will enable us to provide both indoor and outdoor sports activities for our cadets, essential to promote fitness, wellbeing, confidence, self-esteem and teamwork”

Meanwhile, a different type of health activity, mindfulness, was made possible by FOSMH backing of Wild Walks & Mindful Photography organised by Rachel Jones and Rebecca Rowan. They reported that each of the participants felt that their health had improved as a result of the walks and they would continue to practice mindfulness.

Peter Berry concluded:

“We have a simple grant application process on our website and encourage anyone to make a bid if they feel their idea meets the criteria. We want the Easingwold area to have as healthy a 2023 as possible”
